Stealing a car

This is a conversation that I made up that is between two people trying to steal a car

Bob: Hey we really need to get back to Tauranga

Frank: Yeah, but how?

Bob: Well that Holden Commodore down that side road looks quite nice

Frank: Are you serious? Look at that big alarm system, there's no way we can take that! We need to go for something like that old Mazda Premacy over there.

Bob: I don't want to be seen in that!

Frank: Who cares just go find a rock and i'll break the window, just make sure no one sees you

Bob: Ugh fine, found one!

Frank: Cool, that's a nice sized rock. You keep look out while I break the window.

Frank: I've unlocked the door, and hot-wired the car come on you muppet let's hit the road!

Bob: Look theres the Mount, we're here!

Frank: What are we going to do with this car?

Bob: Let's leave it at Bay fair

Frank: Good idea, we can go to McDonalds afterwards.

A trip to the doctors

Today we had to write what we think the conversation will be when Miss C goes to the doctors.

Doctor Mike: "Hello Wendy, what's the problem?"

Miss C: "Well i've just found that I have some redness above my pupil."

Doctor Mike: "Ok, let me have a look, so do you feel any pain?"

Miss C: "No not at all, what do you think you has caused this?

Doctor Mike: "Well you've been sick lately which probably explains things but i'm pretty sure that it's because of your cold. As you've been sneezing and coughing alot that has caused one of the blood vessels behind your eye to pop.

Miss C: "Is it dangerous?"

Doctor Mike: "Well you see what has happened is a small blood vessel has broken underneath the conjunctiva, which is the clear tissue covering the white part of your eye. The blood from the broken vessel is trapped behind the tissue until it can be reabsorbed by the tissues of the eye. Because the blood is under the clear tissue it is quite visible. You don't need to worry though the blood will reabsorbe within 10-20 days depending on the amount of blood there is.

Miss C: What is this called?

Doctor Mike: You have had a Subconjunctival  Hemorrhage.

Miss C: Thank you Dr Mike, is there anything I need to do?

Doctor Mike: There is no treatment necessary, but just try not to rub your eye until it heals.

Miss C: Cool, thank you

Doctor Mike: No problem, have a good day.

3 Advantages:
  • You can get a quick diagnosis.
  • You get an understanding of whats happened.
  • You can answer some questions yourself instead of asking your doctor.

3 Disadvantages
  • The information could be wrong.
  • The language used in the text might be difficult to read.
  • The diagnosis could be wrong and you could get hurt.

Mean, Median and Mode Song

Lyrics

Mode, Median, Mean and Range
Mode, Median, Mean and Range

Don't you think these words sound strange?
Don't you think these words sound strange?

I will get your mind to change

Mode, Mode, Mu, Mu, Mu, Mode, Mode
Is the number that occurs occurs the most most
Singing Mode, Mode, Mu, Mu, Mu, Mode, Mode
Is the number that occurs occurs the most most
You got 1,2,2,3,3,3,4
1,2,2,3,3,3,4, which of those numbers did I say more?
which of those numbers did I say more? 3 is the mode cause it occurs the most
Mode, Mode, Mu, Mu, Mu, Mode, Mode
Is the number that occurs occurs the most most
Singing Mode, Mode, Mu, Mu, Mu, Mode, Mode
Is the number that occurs occurs the most most
You got 1,2,2,3,3,3,4
1,2,2,3,3,3,4, which of those numbers did I say more?
which of those numbers did I say more? 3 is the mode cause it occurs the most
Now stop, lets take it to the middle. Got to find the median no time to daddle diddle
Line up all the numbers from the smallest to the big and the ones thats in the middle does a media jig
Go median, middle number, go median, middle number
Now the third ones mean, not nice but mean
Its the average number if you know what I mean
Just add up all the numbers and divide them by the number of added
Whats that, whats mean?
You add up all the numbers and divide them by the number of added
Yeah you know what I mean
You add up all the numbers and divide them by the number of added
It's the average number, mean, its the average number
1 more round and the song is done
Lets talk about range and have some fun
It's the biggest number minus the smallest number, in the group, in the group
It's the biggest number minus the smallest number , in the group, in the group

You got Mode, Median, Mean and Range
Mode, Median, Mean and Range

Don't you think these words sound strange?
Don't you think these words sound strange?

I just got your mind to change

Quick Explanation

Mean: The mean is the average number. Add up all the numbers and divide them by the number of added.
Median: You line up the numbers from smallest to big and the median is the number in the middle.
Mode: The mode is the number that occurs the most.
Range: The range is the biggest number minus the smallest number in the group

number

Examples
Mean:
If my numbers are 3,2,3,4, the mean is 3 because I add all the numbers = 12 then I divide by 4 because there are 3 numbers.
Median:
If my numbers are 1,2,3,4,5 the median is 3 because it is the middle number.
Mode:
If my numbers are 1,2,2,3,3,3,4 the mean is 3 because it occurs the most.
Range:
If my number are 8,2,4,3 the range is 6 because I get my largest number, 8 and minus the smallest number, 2 which equals 2.

My 200 word story

My story has to include,
A campfire, a scream, and a small lie that gets bigger and bigger.

As the embers rise to the starlit sky above me, I know I can't hold this secret in any longer. I was the one that broke the Camp Wood-Lock trophy. I didn't mean too, truly!

That morning...
I hear a loud scream and I jolt out of bed. The piece of artwork above my headboard with my name, Pearl scrawled across it hits me on the head. Something sounds serious! Nope just my annoying older sister, Stacy. She was obviously quite excited as today my sister and I were heading off to Camp Wood-Lock. Camp Wood-Lock or CWL for short. CWl is a summer camp where my sister and I visited every summer. I always looked forward to going to CWL but for some reason I felt Stacy was even more excited then me.

As the terrain changed beneath our tyres from tarseal to dirt I instantly knew we were here. The fresh pine smell wafted through the air right to my nostrils. I said goodbye to Mum and Dad and raced off to where my best friend was standing. As i picked up speed I realised it was actually a girl that looked like my friend and she was holding the CWL trophy! But too late, BAM! As I got thrown to the ground I painfully looked beside me and what once was the CWL trophy is now thousands of lost memories. I wondered what I was going to do, but I then remembered that one time where Stacy blamed her broken hairdryer on me, my turn...

Bells in my ears

Bells in my ears

You will need:
  • A spoon
  • A piece of string about 55-60 cm long
  • A table
1. In the middle of your string you need to tie a knot to your spoon, make sure you your knot is strong making sure the spoon won't fall off.

2. At both ends of the string make a small loop big enough for your index finger to fit in. The spoon should be in the middle of the string.

3. Then put your fingers through each loop and put your fingers in your ears.

4. Tilt your body forward so that the spoon is suspended in the air. The string should be low enough to be able to easy hit the table.

5. Rock your body backwards and forwards making the spoon hit the table in front of you.

What happens?
As the spoon hits the table you should hear what sounds like a chime or bell. (make sure you don't touch the spoon while it hits the table as you won't hear the chime)

The scientific reason
When the spoon hits the table, the metal sends a vibration up through the string. The vibration then goes to your brain which then sends a message to your ears causing you to hear a chime sound.

The TIS Times

THE TIS TIMES

Last Friday an amazing, inspirational guy called Brando came and talked to Tauranga Intermediate in the school hall. He is walking all around the coastline of New Zealand!
Brando has been walking for over a year now with just his backpack, Lady for company. Inside of his backpack is all that he needs. Some of the things in his pack are, A raft, tent, sleeping bag, a bow  and arrows and alot of other survival gear. Brando's pack must be very heavy!
The reason Brando made this tremendous decision is because he was getting in trouble with the cops and his parents, so he wanted to change his whole life around! He also wanted to find out more about himself and have some time out. Brando stated that he lives by this quote, what goes around comes around but in the end only kindness matters. He even has a tattoo on his arm of it! He also said that it's better to share moments with other people. He realised this after being alone quite alot. For example if he saw an amazing sunset it's awesome to see by yourself but the atmosphere is even more amazing when shared with another person. After a while of walking Brando decided to start walk for a charity, Ronald McDonald house. Ronald McDonald house helps sick kids and Brando has raised over $16,000 for them but his goal is $20,000. I'm sure he can reach this! At the end of Brando's talk he took a whole school selfie! He also broke his personal record of most people in a selfie!

TIS thanks Brando for his awesome talk. Good luck from us all!

The Wiki Game

The wiki game really uses your brain. So what happens is you click play now. Then you join whatever word pops up. Beneath that word there is a goal. Click the top word and your time starts ticking. A wikipedia page should pop up, you are trying to find your goal word. For example: Japan. All the words highlighted blue a links that take you to other wikipedia links by clicking links that relate to Japan you get closer to finding your goal word. Every time you click on a link you get a point but you need to choose what you click carefully, because the person with the least points wins. Speaking of people, you vs people from around the world, so the pressure is on. You need to click links that relate to your goal, thats why before your game you search up a bit about your topic. This game is challenging but it is a good tool to practice skimming and scanning.

One strategy for the game is to look up your goal before you play so you know more and can make more connections when clicking on links.

The Estuary Run

In Rimu house we do an estuary run, here is a set of instructions that show you the way around the course.

The Estuary Run Course

(Handy tip: wear covered footwear, as there are a lot of different surfaces within the course.)

1. First go around the TIS field up to the front gate.

2. Run to the gate go out and past the new dentist's building.

3. Once you get to the end of the road cross the road and turn left onto Grace Rd.

4. Then keep going down Grace Road until you get to the last speed bump, cross over to the other side of the road.

5. Now turn right onto 15th Ave. Go down the hill, past the fake cow. Then turn down the first street just before the gas station.

6. You should now be on a dead end road. There should be a path heading past the water.

7. Keep following the course that follows the estuary until you reach the end of the path. There should be a footpath leading you to the start of the road. You have to go up the hill back onto the path where the new dentist building is. Go to the front gate and run down the path following the school driveway.

8. You then finish at the bleachers.

Hazards: (watch out for these things when running)
Watch out for pedestrians.
Watch for cars.
Stay to the left.
Watch out for glass and other hazardous items in your path.
Be careful when crossing the road.

New reward systems

This term T.I.S is starting a new reward system, and I am writing a short summary on how it works.

First the click cards,
Everyone in the school gets a click card, which is a small card a bit bigger than an eftpos card. On the card you write your name, room number and house. Around the outside of the card are some small squares. At the end of each day everyone gets a click. If you misbehave in class then Miss C will give you a oral warning. If you keep misbehaving then you will get your name on the board and if you keep continuing your bad behaviour you get a cross by your name if you get a cross you don't get a click that day. But if you don't get a cross you get a click that day unless you are absent, you don't get a click.
Once you have 40 clicks you get a Rimu band. You are the only one allowed to wear this band. If you get caught wearing another houses band you get your house band confiscated from you. As soon as you've completed a card, you go onto a new card. By the end of the year if you have 3 completed cards you get a stars badge.

Now I will explain the new stars cards,
If you are caught by a teacher doing good around the school and showing the stars you get a stars card. You then put your card in your house box in the library. At each house hui, you get the Rimu box and your syndicate leader will draw our two people from the box. If your name gets drawn you win a prize. All the cards stay in the box for the year. At the end of each term Mrs Colville will draw out 10 lucky people, one from each house too win a special stars hoodie. Then at the end of the year one lucky person out of the whole school will win a bike.

Both of these new reward systems are new and are hopefully going to improve the behaviour around T.I.S

Road Trip!

Yesterday my family headed on a short road trip to Taupo and Rotorua. We headed to Auckland late last night and stayed in the cutest cabin at Huka Falls Resort.

This morning my family and I went to do some sightseeing. We saw the most beautiful and breathtaking views at a miraculous beach we found. I can't believe we live in a beautiful country that has the most spectacular things too see, no wonder tourists love it here!

After we did a few bits and bobs we headed to Huka Falls. Huka Falls is a beautiful lake and waterfall with a 1 and 2 hour tramp that goes through the bush (which we didn't have enough time for so we just went to the lookout to take a few photos). The water is stunning shade of light aquamarine blue. My Mum says the water in the falls is so pure because the water is moving so quickly. I think that it is so pretty but very powerful! It is so crazy though how the water is so powerful up until the water fall than about 500 metres away from the water falls end the lake is completely still!
My Sister and I threw a small pebble into the falls which instantly disappeared as soon as it hit the water's surface. I wonder how many people have dropped iPhones and camera's into the water? I was so relieved when I had safely brought my iPod back into the car!

After Huka falls we drove to a small park and fed some ducks. I got very close to some very brave ducks. Some even came less than 30 centimetres away from me! I hand fed a couple ducks but we then had to leave. My brother wanted to keep one, but thankfully we convinced him not too!

From there we drove to Rotorua and got some lunch and then headed for Tauranga.

I am now at home safe and sound and reminiscing about my amazing 2 day adventure. I will definitley remember the spectacular place our family went together and I can't wait for our next family road trip!

Here are a few photos from my awesome road trip! Enjoy!

The cute little cabin we stayed in.

An action shot from the amazing beach we found. (thanks for the awesome photography Dad!)

Huka Falls!!

The water fall at Huka Falls.

Down the bottom of the waterfall.

Taking a walk down the beach. :)

Just one of the amazing views!

Breathing in the salty air.

A panorama shot of Huka Falls.

The force in the water fall is just amazing!

At one of our stops we saw an beautiful view.

Looking out over the rooftops of Taupo and seeing a towering mountain.

There were only ripples in the water at the beach we found, nothing like the beach back home in Tauranga!

A creepy sea creatures skeleton my little brother found.

Feeding the ducks.
